McCormick launches the high-performance XTX tractor range in Canada

  • New XtraSpeed eight-speed powershift and optional power range shift
  • Six-cylinder engine power outputs from 127kW (173hp) to 168kW (228hp)
  • Extra power for pto operations from electronic engine management
  • Electrically operated hydraulic valves using seat-mounted controls
  • New four-post cab design with full-length doors, new roof and interior style

The rapid pace of McCormick’s product development plan continues with the unveiling and imminent commercial introduction of the new XTX range, comprising three models with maximum power outputs from 165 PTO hp to 200 PTO hp.

Replacing the top three models in the current MTX range (the MTX165, MTX185 and MTX200), the tractors have a new transmission with an eight-speed powershift and power range shift option; a new transaxle giving increased lift capacity and improved pto geometry; electronic control of all hydraulic functions for the first time; and a new four-post cab.

The McCormick XTX series provides further evidence that McCormick continues to engineer new tractors with features designed to give farmers and contractors top performance in the field. .

    Eight-speed powershift
The McCormick XTX tractor’s innovative XtraSpeed powershift transmission is engineered and manufactured along with the rest of the driveline by McCormick. Using the performance-proven structure and many of the same components as the current four-speed system, the new design gives eight progressive powershift speeds in each of four ranges – resulting in a total of 32 forward and 24 reverse ratios.

The multi-disc clutch packs are shifted under full load so there is no loss of momentum and the advanced electronically modulated valves ensure a smooth shift from one ratio to another.

“With a choice of eight powershift ratios, each giving a 17% increase in speed, and four synchromesh ranges, drivers of the McCormick XTX will be able to select the best working speed for the job and conditions.

When driving on the road, Speed Matching enables the operator to slow the tractor then shift to the most appropriate gear simply by depressing the clutch pedal. The McCormick XTX tractors can be fitted with a set of 16 creep gears – engaged simply by a rocker switch – to provide extra-slow working speeds.

    Control choice
McCormick XTX buyers can choose between three levels of electronic control for the transmission and external services hydraulics to best suit the work the tractor will do and the level of sophistication required.

With the standard XtraSpeed specification, the eight powershift speeds are selected using a thumb-pulse switch on the side of the synchromesh range selector lever. Range shifts are made using either the clutch pedal or a transmission clutch button on the same lever.

XtraSpeed-E replaces the range lever with a multi-function adjustable joystick on the side console. In addition to push-button range shifts, this has buttons to lift and lower the implement linkage.

With XtraSpeed-Eplus, the control joystick performs the same functions but is mounted on the seat armrest, where it is positioned alongside mini joysticks and dials for a set of four electrically operated external services hydraulic valves. Buttons on the main control joystick operate an optional fifth electric valve as well as the implement linkage.

In addition to power range shifts, XtraSpeed-E and XtraSpeed-Eplus have a number of extra transmission features, including automatic up- and down-shifts between the eight speeds when in the top range, range skip and programmable start-up and shuttle reverse gear selection.

Engines with ‘power boost’ and ‘speed economy’ features
The McCormick XTX tractors are powered by the same six-cylinder McCormick B-Power and Cummins engines that have proven themselves to be strong performers in the biggest MTX models.

However, for the XTX series the engines have the additional feature of an electronic power boost that releases more power when working with pto-driven machinery. Output of the XTX185 engine can increase to 146kW (198hp) – for transport as well as pto work in this case – the XTX200 has up to 157kW (213hp) for pto work and the XTX215 has up to 228hp when operating powered implements.

The engine management electronics also save fuel on the road. Once the XTX tractor has reached its 40kph top speed, engine speed is slowed progressively to just 1840rpm, saving fuel and giving the driver a quieter, more relaxed drive.

    Hydraulic lift and power take-off
The McCormick XTX185 and XTX200 models have 30% – over 2600kg – more implement lift capacity than the models they replace as they both now match the top model in the range, the XTX215, with a maximum lift of 10,950kg. The externally mounted cylinders and Category III lift arms are mounted on a new transaxle housing.

Main benefit of the new housing is that the power take-off stub shaft is positioned 150mm higher than before, which improves pto shaft geometry when powered implements are lifted clear of the ground. The new pto design for the McCormick XTX also includes a 540/1000rpm gearing.

    Driver’s cab
A new driver’s cab with full-size rear-hinged doors filling both sides of the four-post structure is introduced with the McCormick XTX series.

Once inside, drivers will appreciate the new-style instruments first seen on selected models within the MTX series, along with fresh trim and interior colours, and new design upholstered passenger seat. Outside there is an impressive array of work lights set into the front and rear of the cab’s new roof panel, which also houses a new arrangement for cab filtration.

The cab can be equipped with McCormick’s ‘active’ cab suspension, which responds to different driver weights to maintain a constant ride height. Advanced low friction dampers coupled to a gas/oil accumulator provide controlled springing, while a Panhard rod prevents the cab from swaying as it absorbs bumps.

The system effectively complements the XTX tractor’s independent front axle suspension to give drivers a comfortable ride both in the field and on the road.
